summer game project 09, part 1

This summer, I started a game development initiative at my university. The goal of the initiative is to round up talent across my program and bring these people together, fashion out a vision we can all agree with and deploy that vision.

What kind of game to be made hasn't been decided yet. These questions will be answered on our first general assembly meeting on the 18th of May. To attend the meeting, everyone has to bring at least 1 page of ideas of what they want this game to be, or what an ideal game would be; like a short essay. Sketches were also encouraged.

What I'm about to write isn't the contents of that essay, but a general umbrella of a text with the same topic. I think most of us in my program will agree that we don't want to do a vain killing feast of a game feature large chested women in attire all but protective in some attempt to appeal at a general demographic.

My main objective is to bring something new to the game medium. To do this, I should look at what games have brought us until now. Innovation in games has always been an independent developer's stock and trade. With no large corporations to answer too, this section of the gaming industry can easily explore different ways of pushing the medium, not that there isn't anything to be said about large game companies pushing the envelope.

I want to talk about stories and plot as they relate to an objective or quests in a game. Video games used to usually have a simple one off goal. A classic example is Mario's "save the princess" plot which they have used on every iteration in the Mario franchise.

The Mario franchise is indeed the worst when it comes to plot and quest integration. Every time, it's about saving the princess. Although Mario games are fun, each level is nothing but a challenge in reaching the end of a level. There is no plot going on, the formula "save the princess" is too plain and lays everything out so bare, it's really a trap of a plot.

What's interesting is how that formula changes when you look at Zelda games, for example, where you get a sub quest system with back and forth interaction with the world and it's characters. The paradigm is fairly the same when it comes to other games as well. We go from "save the princess" to "save/retreive the princess" and then "save/retreive X" where X eventually wasn't even a person any more, but an object.

The paradigm really changes when heavily integrated with a story, think of Splinter Cell. What's interesting about tactical espionage game is the variety of objectives that help further the plot. SC games do this well, and in doing so they add mystery to the plot and forces you to pay attention to the story to understand and further your objectives. This despite the fact that the good guys in any Tom Clancy title (or book for that matter) are always American and the bad ones are always either Chinese, Russian or Arabic. If it weren't for that stupid plot point that you always know about, splinter cell would be a much better title and would have a much better plot to offer to it's gamers. In my opinion, it's the difference between the kind of plot SC has, and the kind Metal Gear has. Metal gear games have a special way of taking a fairly benign mission (reckon) and turning it into a discovery, or a lead, that you track down. It leads you down this rabbit hole of suspense and mystery. It's what makes it so good.

That's why I think there's something to be said about tying goals to plot points in a more serious and involved manner. Yet even with a game like Metal Gear, you can kind of get away with just reading the objectives list. This is where Zelda games come in. They got that fixed by making plot points expand through characters. Knowing how far you are in a Zelda game is a matter of seeing how much terrain you have access too and what the characters have to say about what's going on around you, what equipment you got etc.

So on the one hand, I want to have a bread crumb story line like you see in metal gear, as opposed to an obvious give away of what you are spending the entire game doing like you do in Zelda or Mario (save the princess). On the other hand, I want to get rid of the objectives menu and have plot points revolve around characters instead of mission briefings.

This doesn't mean that we need to have a non-linear questing model, like elder scroll's Morrowind game does. That would be an unrealistic standard to place on ourselves for this game. In fact, I encourage the plot to be linear, it just doesn't have to be such a damn give away.

Personally, I have a clear bias towards adventure games or adventure/rpg games like Zelda. They are the kinds of games I really love and enjoy playing over and over. If I want to make a 3D game I would want it to be an adventure game like the 3D zelda games were. Specifically, the first 1/3 of a Zelda game is where I want to focus my attention. This is the stage of the game where you are still close to your village and haven't yet gotten in the crux of this journey where all you do is get the next item from temple to temple that is on the climb up to the climax of the game. In this early stage, everything you do is related to yourself and your community in the game. I think this creates a deeper connection and a better, more profound, emotional response to events that happen. To give a concrete example:

I'm talking about the satisfaction you got when you killed the spider inside the Dekou tree in Zelda, ocarina of time. Knowing that what you did was directly relevant to your character and his community village. It's also the sadness you get when the Dekou tree dies shortly after, knowing that this event also effects your character and his community (except that, in actuality, it didn't because we soon find out the game is really only about saving the princess).

I use Zelda mostly as my example, but our game doesn't have to look anything like it. We should also consider an urban setting or an alternate setting (space, steam punk, horror/grundge, augmented reality, alien, etc). My focus in my argument is about how to tell our story, and how the game should tell it to us.

I'm actually not to picky about how the camera would work or the controls, but I would like that the game would be in 3rd person. For simplicity's sake, the game would be single player, but that doesn't discount the fact that it should connect to the internet or not. It would actually be interesting to have a single player game that could still add and get data from a server.

My university program is often involved in data visualization, which is one way to add an interesting concept to our game. We try and visualize all sorts of data, a common example is data on the web. Over the years I have seen great projects that visualize data in interesting ways, like visualizing network latency, or site traffic, or gps caching. Sometimes we like to scramble things, like apply pictures of a previous site on a site you are currently viewing, and then keeping the cycle going from web page to web page. I've seen a project that could surf the web and just stack images on a page. I've also done a type relational model of words as defined by google. we've used tons of APIs in my program to help us achieve what needed to be done and I think we can bring something interesting by having our own project fetch data like that over the web. The problem of course is finding a type of data that we know we can parse at a regular rate with some expectation of the result. Another problem is where do we apply this data in the game? It would be kind of stupid if NPC characters fetched random tweets on twitter and just spat one out when you talked to it - but it might be less stupid if it was fetching tweets from your network. It might be also interesting if we can populate a city with your facebook /twitter / laconica / msn / google chat / etc network and be able to look at them in the form of a status or talk to them and get a message from them. Facebook is really more of a status kind of thing, while twitter is a short message. Msn is more dynamic but requires your friends to be participating (although in a different way, by being online). Consequentially, we could never limit the size of a city, it would always have to expand in relation to your network size... unless we capped it, which isn't a bad idea actually...

But this kind of data parsing makes our game look more like a "playstation home" waste of time in 3d thing. Let's wind down the knob and be a little more realistic. Going back to the idea of an adventure game, what can we take from the internet to make our game more interesting, what can I bring to our adventure game and make it unique.
