multi touch art project - conclusions of a prototype

So i finally exhibited my sensory interface project a few weeks back. I've taken time to cool down and collect my thoughts on the whole process, and what the presentation gave me as far as accomplishments and failures.
To quote io9: "it's a disaster". I have never truly been so disappointed in my entire life. 6 months of work and I could not finish on time. It is a disaster. We had the money, we had the technology, but we didn't have the time it took for a project like this to be built. We had greatly under estimated numerous factors involved with this project.
I suppose I can shift blame because this is the first time i do a project of this large of a scope. When outlining the project, I thought I would be done in 6 months, not take 6 months to simply build the shell.
The outer shell had a lot of thought put into it, so I always understood that in a lot of ways it was going to take a lot of time from us. What was unexpected was how much the shell worked against us. Being circular in design, every time something was done to the outer shell, we had to spend a lot of time planning for the curves before we could execute anything on it. The acrylic had to be cut, the cloth had to be sown together, edges had to be worked on by hand. It was absolutely ridiculous. The shell is also so large, transporting was a day's chore, it didn't even fit the car the first time, we had to get a van. Assembly was left to the last minute and we discovered a slew of problems we had not anticipated at all. Things like heat from the projector dissipating no where and simply accumulating inside because the shell is closed. So we had to drill holes on the spot to keep things from over heating. we spent nearly 100 dollars in cloth to serve the size of the project. The problems just keep on coming. This shell will take me another 3 months to fully complete.
The tech was ok, there was a problem with the silicon mix we used, but that can be fixed for next time, and again, that goes in building. No, specifically, the technology is fine, and i know it works, i've seen it work, i've made it work. Even though the software wasn't entirely ready, it was mostly due to the time spent actually building and not actually codding. The hardest part can be remedied by porting the firefwire cam extension into the latest version of open frameworks, 0.06.
I guess this project might have required a 3rd person, but i am not very good at managing people. Anyone can see that when they see how i manage the CartCGD ( www.cartcgd.org ), but maybe i should suck it up and learn a new skill. in any case. i want to get to the last point, what happened at the gallery, and wrap this up with a conclusion.
What we were able to present at the gallery was a multi touch interface that barely worked, that had to be projected on the ceiling, that had to have the acrylic propped up so the hot air can flow, and not have any of the physical switches working, only having sound and image, but no lighting, as an interaction. People liked it, some people liked it a lot, but i didn't work this hard to make a multi touch screen. I made this to make an installation, i was trying to make art, to make a commentary on something that affected the culture i lived in, and the whole thing blew in my fucking face.
