On the experience of making video games of, or lack thereof

So it's been almost 8 months since the video game project at concordia started and it will, in less than a week, come to an end to leave room for new projects starting in January. I think now is the time for me to share some thoughts on what has happened over course of the project and what is coming up next with the game dev collective.
Looking back, i have a lot to say about the experience. A lot of frustrations, a lot of learning, a lot of achievements and a lot more mistakes.
I remember this all starting as a DATA project, since then i wonder if they remember... DATA is important to me, it always will be as a place that fosters a culture of intelligent people talking about larger issues, but as much as we all want to, we never really make anything. I guess that's why i didn't wait around for that hopeful "summer of data projects" no matter how well thought out it was.
In a general sense, what i did was exactly the opposite of the DATA summer project - no thinking, just doing. I wanted to make a game, so i got together as many people as possible and i tried my damn best to make it happen.
That process grew away from me and into a life of it's own; no longer is the game development collective my "baby", but it's own entity of which i now feel am a single unit.
Have i created a monster? Or a mechanism for streamlined learning into a growing industry with academic support and business contacts?
time will tell i suppose.
I guess i should come back to the core of the topic, but at the same time i don't feel it's necessary to explain all the mistakes we went through. I am the kind of person who "learns things the hard way" and the game collective is certainly a reflection of that part of myself (slowly though that reflection is being shared by those with whom i share the core of the club with) .
Having made every possible mistake in the good book we don't see how any project we take over from now can be anything BUT a smashing success. Despite making so many mistakes, or maybe, as a consequence, rather, we have learnt a tremendous amount about how things should be conducted with respect to game development.
Key to that learning process was the Montreal International Game Summit. I don't think I have ever been smacked in the face with so much knowledge in my life _ever_. No University course comes near the amount of knowledge we collect over time against a summit like Migs.
Having gone once, i see no justification to not go again, and again, and again. The experience is overwhelming and has become the single most motivating event since the game project started. It's one thing to learn from our mistakes, it's quite another to have our mistakes predicated, resolved, and the improved, all within 2 days.
Everyone who went with me at MIGS is extremely pumped for the next iteration of projects we are going to begin. This includes pre-production, production and post-production as well as how to push the medium of games and relative to that: what issues are being explored?
I think, as next year begins, i would like the game development collective to focus on 3 things: 1) issues in game design 2) delivery of a product 3) streamlined learning. The order is important to me, as I want to focus on having people plan out a realizable goal, and then achieve it.

Personally, the biggest topic that stuck with me from MIGS is the issue of games as art. Are we going to become an industry of toys? or an industry of literature? If we want to be an industry of literature, we have to think about 1) what we want to say and 2) how we are going to say it through _interaction_. not cut scenes, text, images, voice overs or visuals, but INTERACTION. How does my interaction with the game define the message of the game.

University is often seen as this bubble: we can fuck up here, so we can succeed later. I think we should change that dynamic a bit which is why i want to focus on delivery for next year. That means paying attention to the scope of a game, the skill level available and the amount of work-hours available over an 12 month period.

Despite the gratuitous amount of failure university can harbour - Learning is always the core and i want to stop fucking around and learn what must be learnt. What do we know now? what are the single most relevant things we want to learn over 6 months? how can we apply those things over the next 6 months? We need to come to terms with the fact that we can't learn everything in a week, it takes time, and there is a better way of learning than just throwing ourselves at the mercy of documents. I think there is a dynamic between tutorials, known knowledge and simply being pointed in the right direction to figure out a set problem and learn as much as possible about a specific topic.
Anyway, i think this is good for next year, and i'm personally eager of starting new projects with the above goals in mind.
Oh and seeing fresh faces too of course! the more the better right?
